Shopify Pricing

Pricing is the fastest lever most merchants have — and the most dangerous one to touch at scale. This cluster covers how to change prices across hundreds or thousands of variants, schedule sales without breaking Google Shopping feeds, apply psychological rounding rules cleanly, and stay compliant with the EU Omnibus 30-day reference-price rule and UK ASA guidance.

The pricing surface

Every Shopify variant has a real price, a compare-at price and — with Shopify Markets enabled — one or more market-specific overrides. Getting all three consistent under time pressure is the operational challenge. A bulk edit that touches only the base price silently strands market overrides at last quarter's values, and a compare-at left set after a sale ends is now a compliance issue in the EU.

Sales vs. price changes

Discount codes, automatic discounts and real price changes solve different problems: codes for targeted campaigns and cart-level logic, automatic discounts for storewide urgency, real price changes for permanent shifts and feed hygiene. This cluster covers exactly when each one wins, including the feed-visibility trade-off (Google Shopping sees real prices, not codes).

Margin math

Price without margin discipline is wishful thinking. Guides here include practical margin, markup and break-even formulas, a free profit-margin calculator, and worked examples showing how a naive 10% price bump interacts with landed cost, payment fees and refund rates.

Rounding & psychology

Charm pricing (.99 / .95 / .90) still measurably outperforms round numbers on most consumer catalogs. But manual rounding turns a five-minute price sweep into an afternoon — the practical answer is a rounding rule baked into the bulk transform itself.

Compliance

EU Omnibus, UK ASA, and several US state laws require the compare-at value shown next to a sale to reflect a genuine prior price. Automated compare-at hygiene at the end of every promotion is no longer optional.
