To bulk change vendor or product type on Shopify, open Products, filter your list, click Edit products, add the Vendor or Product Type column and edit inline. For large batches or when you need undo, export CSV and re-import with corrected values, or use a dedicated bulk-edit app that previews the change before it commits.
- The admin bulk editor is fast but has no preview and no undo.
- CSV scales but silently overwrites empty cells — always take a filtered export as a snapshot first.
- A dedicated bulk-edit app is the safest option for recurring changes because it previews and undoes each field.
- Verify a five-product sample after any bulk change before closing the ticket.
Three paths: the native admin bulk editor for small filtered lists, CSV for one-off bulk changes, and a dedicated app when you need preview, safety limits and undo. Pick by risk, not by habit.
The manual way — Shopify admin
Products → Edit products → add Vendor and Type columns → edit inline. Fine for a few hundred products. Watch for typos and inconsistent casing (Nike vs NIKE vs nike): Shopify treats them as three vendors and splits your reporting.
The CSV way — with pitfalls
Set the Vendor and Type columns explicitly on every row. Pitfalls: (1) empty cells overwrite the existing value to blank; (2) automated collections that use vendor or product type as a condition immediately re-shuffle their members once the field changes — take a snapshot first; (3) product type is also used by the Google & YouTube app for category mapping, so a rename can shift feed categories.
The app way — preview and undo
A bulk-edit app applies vendor/type as a normalized value (fixing casing along the way), previews which products will move between automated collections, and can undo the change if the resulting reporting looks wrong.
Filter → export CSV snapshot → preview → apply → verify on five products → keep an undo path open. Every safe bulk change on Shopify looks like this, whichever tool you use.
Bulk edit products, prices, inventory and metadata — with previews, scheduling and reliable undo.
